A Force To Be Reckoned With

Winstone Aggregates’ Belmont Quarry is one of only three in the Lower Hutt area capable of manufacturing a wide range of aggregate products including greywacke, seal chip, concrete aggregates and sands. Based on the number of large roading and construction projects proposed in the Wellington region, demand is expected to sustain.

A high degree of natural fractures in the greywacke rock at Belmont Quarry allows most rock extraction to be completed by a large excavator, and the new Cat 374DL Excavator recently acquired by Winstones is certainly adding to the production capabilities. Occasionally it is blasted with explosives. Rob Paddison, Winstone’s Southern Operations manager, says that the Cat excavator has a high breakout force which helps to reduce the use of explosives.  

“The configuration of our 374 is very well suited to the conditions at Belmont,” Rob says.
